How to Choose a Roofing Contractor in Illinois: 7 Things to Check
Licensing, insurance, storm-chaser red flags, and what a good estimate looks like.
1. Illinois roofing license
Illinois requires roofers to carry a state license. Ask for the number and verify it on the IDFPR website. No valid license, no conversation.
2. General liability and workers' comp insurance
Ask for current certificates of insurance — both general liability and workers' compensation. If a worker is injured on your property and the contractor doesn't carry workers' comp, you could be liable.
3. Local references
Ask for references in your specific town. A good roofer should be able to give you 3-5 names of recent customers within 5 miles.
4. Manufacturer credentials
Look for credentials like GAF Master Elite, CertainTeed Select ShingleMaster, or Owens Corning Platinum Preferred. These require specific training and a track record.
5. Written estimate
A real estimate spells out scope, materials, brand names, warranty, and timeline. Single-line quotes are a red flag.
6. Workmanship warranty
Ask how long the contractor warranties their own work. Ten years is reasonable. Lifetime workmanship warranties from a brand-new company aren't worth the paper they're printed on.
7. Years in business
How long has this contractor been operating in Illinois? Storm chasers come and go. The roofer you want to hire is the one who'll still be answering the phone in 15 years.
