Best Shingle Brands for Heavy Snow in Illinois (2026 Contractor Guide)
Illinois winters don't ease into anything. By late November, roofs across the northwest suburbs are dealing with freeze-thaw cycles, ice dam formation, wind-driven snow off the open prairie, and in communities closer to Lake Michigan, lake-effect snow events that can dump several inches in a few hours. Not every shingle is built for that, and not every contractor installs them correctly when it matters most.
This guide breaks down the four shingle brands we most commonly install at Leaders Roofing Corp and how each one holds up to what Chicagoland winters actually deliver.
Why Illinois Winters Are Uniquely Hard on Roofs
The Chicago metro sits at an intersection of several punishing weather patterns. Freeze-thaw cycles — temperatures swinging above and below freezing repeatedly throughout winter — are especially damaging because water expands when it freezes, working its way under shingles and flashing over time. Ice dams form along roof eaves when heat escaping from the attic melts snow higher on the roof, which refreezes at the cold overhang and backs water up under the shingles. Heavy snow loads stress the deck. And open exposure in communities like Schaumburg and Elk Grove Village means shingles get tested by high wind on a regular basis.
The result: a roof that performs adequately in a milder climate may fail within 10 to 15 years in this region if the wrong product is selected or improperly installed.
What to Look for in a Shingle for Cold Climates
Wind rating of 130 mph or higher — standard shingles are rated to 60 or 110 mph; Illinois wind exposure warrants the upgrade
Class 4 impact resistance — the highest UL 2218 rating, important not just for hail but for ice pellets and freeze-thaw stress
SBS polymer modification — styrene-butadiene-styrene rubberizing makes asphalt more flexible in extreme cold, reducing cracking
Algae resistance — moisture retention in northern exposures makes algae streaking a common issue in this region
Strong self-sealing adhesive — the sealant strip must bond reliably even when installed in colder temperatures
GAF Timberline HDZ
The Timberline HDZ is one of the most widely installed shingles in the country, and for the Chicago market it earns its reputation. The "HDZ" designation reflects its High Definition appearance combined with GAF's LayerLock technology, which mechanically fuses the shingle layers together rather than relying solely on the sealant strip. In high-wind conditions, this matters.
Wind rating: 130 mph (with WindProven upgrade, unlimited with proper fastening)
Impact rating: Class 4 available in select colorways
Warranty: Lifetime limited; 10-year workmanship available through GAF-certified contractors
Why it works here: Consistent performance in freeze-thaw conditions, wide color availability, strong contractor network for warranty continuity
Owens Corning Duration
Owens Corning's Duration line introduced SureNail technology — a woven fabric strip in the nailing zone that gives fasteners significantly stronger hold than a standard nail through asphalt alone. For Illinois winters, where wind and thermal expansion stress fastener points repeatedly, this is a meaningful engineering difference.
Wind rating: 130 mph standard; Duration FLEX reaches 130 mph with SBS modification for added cold-weather flexibility
Impact rating: Class 4 on Duration STORM
Warranty: Lifetime limited with TruProtection coverage
Why it works here: The Duration FLEX variant with SBS modification is a strong choice for areas with severe freeze-thaw exposure, including Lake County communities like Lake Zurich and Libertyville
CertainTeed Landmark
CertainTeed's Landmark series is a dual-layer laminate shingle with a long track record in cold-climate markets. CertainTeed has built particular strength in the northeastern and upper Midwestern U.S., where cold-weather performance has been tested for decades. Their StreakFighter algae resistance is well-suited to shaded, north-facing exposures common in older neighborhoods.
Wind rating: 110 mph standard; Landmark PRO and Landmark MAX reach 130 mph
Impact rating: Class 4 on Landmark IR
Warranty: Lifetime SureStart PLUS warranty through certified installers
Why it works here: Historically strong in markets with hard winters; good fit for established neighborhoods in Wilmette, Winnetka, and Evanston where architectural character matters
Atlas Pinnacle Pristine
Atlas is a somewhat lesser-known name to homeowners but increasingly used by professional contractors for its Scotchgard Protector algae resistance (a 3M technology) and its HP42 high-performance sealant. The Pinnacle Pristine is Atlas's premium laminate and holds up well in wet, cold conditions.
Wind rating: 130 mph
Impact rating: Class 4 available
Warranty: Lifetime with 4-Star warranty for registered installers
Why it works here: 3M Scotchgard protection performs well in the moisture-heavy conditions near the lakefront; competitive pricing at the premium tier
Ice Dam Prevention: It's About More Than the Shingle
No shingle, regardless of brand or quality, fully compensates for a poorly ventilated attic. Ice dams form when warm air leaks from living space into the attic, heats the roof deck, and melts snow. That meltwater runs to the cold overhang and refreezes. The water then backs up under the shingles, regardless of how well they're installed.
Proper ice dam prevention requires adequate attic insulation to keep heat in the living space, balanced soffit and ridge ventilation to maintain a cold, even roof temperature, and ice-and-water shield underlayment extending at least 24 inches inside the exterior wall line. Illinois building code requires this at eaves; we typically recommend extending it further in higher-risk areas.
Installation Matters as Much as Brand
We'll say it plainly: a premium shingle installed incorrectly will fail faster than a standard shingle installed right. Nail placement, starter strip alignment, drip edge sequencing, and sealant activation in cold temperatures are all points where installation quality determines real-world performance. This is why the workmanship behind the installation is just as important as the product on the truck.
If you're evaluating contractors, ask them directly: what is your nailing pattern, how do you handle cold-weather installation, and what workmanship warranty do you offer? The answers will tell you a lot.
